Wi-Fi network utilizes radio signals, and these radio signals can either be in the 5GHZ frequency or the 2.4GHZ frequency. Most, if not all contemporary WiFi devices adopt the 2.4GHZ frequency, but there exist some devices that make use of both the 5GHZ and the 2.4GHZ frequency. Some home broadband routers support both the 2.4GHZ and the 5GHZ frequency; these broadband are called dual-band wireless. In this article, we’ll be dwelling more on the 5GHZ Wi-Fi.

What is 5GHZ WiFi? The 5GHZ Wi-Fi has been in existence for the past two decades. This short-range networking system is quite different from 5G cellular, or 5G E. The 5GHZ WiFi operates in the five-gigahertz radio band. Even if it was introduced in the year 1999, the 5GHZ Wi-Fi became prominent after the release of the 802.11n home routers. Currently, most WiFi devices support 5GHZ WiFi.

The two frequency bands that are mainly used by Wi-Fi are the 2.4GHZ and the 5GHZ. Since the 2.4GHZ band is the default for most gadgets, it is equipped with just three channels and is utilized by gadgets such as Bluetooth, microwave ovens, remote controls, etc. Unlike the 5GHZ, the 2.4GHZ can get teemed, and its speed can reduce drastically.

The 5GHZ Wi-Fi isn’t like the 2.4HZ Wi-Fi, this channelboast of more number of available channels, unlike its low-quality counterpart.  Also, and more importantly, the 5GHZ WiFi is faster and more efficient, but its range can’t be compared to that of the 2.4HZ WiFi.


With the 5GHZ Wi-Fi, users can enjoy the low noise that comes with the 5GH spectrum. This offers a faster data rate, lesser troubles that emanate from disconnections, and a thrilling experience. Also, with this WiFi, you have no interference dilemma from wireless equipment such as Bluetooth, etc. Microwaves don’t work within that level, so there is lesser noise.

The 5GHZ WiFi also boasts of a stronger and faster signal, and it needs less power to get your signal above the noise floor, of which the outcome is better battery health and network performance.


Not all your devices have the features of 5GHZ built-in, though they will still function optimally just like how they did before on the 2.4GHZ WiFi, but should function better when you unload traffic from that network to the 5GHZ network. Though there exist some disadvantages that come with the 5GHZ WiFi; for instance, if two signals are being transmitted utilizing similar power and antennas, the signals that boast of the highest frequency won’t travel far; this denotes that the 5GHZ WiFi can’t go far.

Since the 5GHZ WiFi data won’t travel a far distance; you won’t experience any interference as you would with the 2.4GHZ WiFi. There are also other environmental factors that would determine if the 5GHZ will be suitable for your circumstances. A home that has little devices and neighbors who live about ¼ miles apart may find the 2,4GHZ more advantageous than the 5GHZ. While an urban home with close-by neighbors will find the 5GHZ more advantageous.
